Hiking Guide for Leaders / Alternates
  • At the monthly meeting, and before the hike
    • After choosing the hike you will lead (see trail rating) it will be published.
Hikers will sign up or call you.
    • Hikes are limited to 15 people.
If the limit is reached, the Alternate will be notified to form another group.
More Alternates can be arranged if needed.
  • At the Clubhouse (departure)
    • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
    • All hikers must sign in.
    • If there is more than one group, but too few hikers in one group, balance the hikers between the groups.
    • All hikers must be Club members, and have:
      • Attended a monthly meeting,
      • Filled out an application and waiver,
      • Paid fee,
      • Received the club's Standard Operating Procedure document,
    • Brief hikers about the event.
      • Identify the mountain and trail.
      • Advise about the availability of restrooms.
      • Remind them that no one hikes past the leader.
We are hiking as a controlled group !
    • Determine drivers and riders.
    • Hand out directions and/or maps.
    • If there is more than one group, carpool by group to avoid waiting at the trailhead.
  • Arrival at the trailhead, and on the hike
    • Tell hikers which car has the sign-in sheet.
    • No one is to start hiking until the leader is ready.
    • If not all hikers have arrived at the trailhead, wait 10 minutes after the group is ready.
After 10 minutes, the non-arrivals are on their own to hike or turn back.
    • If there are two groups, space them apart by 15 minutes.
    • Remind the hikers that no one hikes past the leader.
    • Hike at comfortable pace for the group to stay together -do not rush the hike.
    • Stop for a break every 15 minutes, for about 5 minutes, whether they need it or not.
Ask whether the pace is appropriate and adjust as necessary.
About half way along the hike, take a longer break of 20-30 minutes for lunch.
