- At the monthly meeting, and before the hike
- After choosing the hike you will lead (see trail rating) it will be published.
Hikers will sign up or call you.
- Hikes are limited to 15 people.
If the limit is reached, the Alternate will be notified to form another group.
More Alternates can be arranged if needed.
- At the Clubhouse (departure)
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
- All hikers must sign in.
- If there is more than one group, but too few hikers in one group, balance the hikers between the groups.
- All hikers must be Club members, and have:
- Attended a monthly meeting,
- Filled out an application and waiver,
- Paid fee,
- Received the club's Standard Operating Procedure document,
- Brief hikers about the event.
- Identify the mountain and trail.
- Advise about the availability of restrooms.
- Remind them that no one hikes past the leader.
We are hiking as a controlled group !
- Determine drivers and riders.
- Hand out directions and/or maps.
- If there is more than one group, carpool by group to avoid waiting at the trailhead.
- Arrival at the trailhead, and on the hike
- Tell hikers which car has the sign-in sheet.
- No one is to start hiking until the leader is ready.
- If not all hikers have arrived at the trailhead, wait 10 minutes after the group is ready.
After 10 minutes, the non-arrivals are on their own to hike or turn back.
- If there are two groups, space them apart by 15 minutes.
- Remind the hikers that no one hikes past the leader.
- Hike at comfortable pace for the group to stay together -do not rush the hike.
- Stop for a break every 15 minutes, for about 5 minutes, whether they need it or not.
Ask whether the pace is appropriate and adjust as necessary.
About half way along the hike, take a longer break of 20-30 minutes for lunch.
